Staying Calm During Stressful Situations
The past year and a half has stressed everyone throughout the world. No matter how good your coping mechanisms are, there has been an impact on our mental health globally. Experiencing the pandemic has made us: anxious, depressed, and traumatized. Some of us are lonely. The effects of the pandemic are reflective of your personality, lifestyle, and demographics. Disadvantaged groups have been challenged more by the pandemic and our work situation also factors into how stressed we have become.
Staying calm, has become of even greater importance as we gradually work our way out of this pandemic.
“When adversity strikes, that’s when you have to be the most calm. Take a step back, stay strong, stay grounded and press on.” – LL Cool J.
Research has proven that those who can remain calm in challenging situations are much more successful in all that they do. It’s the person who remains calm, who stays in control of any challenging situations that they may encounter. Staying calm when you are not in a challenging situation is important as well, because anxiety is cumulative. So even if you are not in a challenging situation, if you have been in one and not felt in control, then you have already built up stress from the situation and you will carry it with you. That’s why it is so important to find the activities and strategies that work best for you to calm yourself. When you identify that you are feeling stressed, these activities and strategies should be your go-to tool in your toolbox to help you destress and reduce the build of stress in your body.
“Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.” – Zig Ziglar
When you are feeling stressed and anxious; breathe, admit that you are anxious and angry, challenge your thoughts, release the anxiety and anger, visualize yourself calm, think the situation through, change your focus, relax your body. Then choose your customized calming tool that you know works for you.
